My Professional Experience of Dyslexia

Hi, I’m Antonio, the founder of Dyslexic Brain Coach.

I’m a Dyslexia Coach and have spent the past 24 years coaching children, young people, college and university students and adults to overcome dyslexia difficulties and achieve more in education and/or in life. I have also coached parents of children experiencing dyslexia difficulties, and coached a range of dyslexia professionals to use my Externalising Dyslexia Approach.

In February 2021 I decided to focus all my attention on creating this dyslexia coaching membership site, so that greater numbers of people can, if they find it useful, make use of my approach to dyslexia coaching.

The dyslexia coaching that is delivered within the membership platform is informed by my doctoral study on dyslexia which I undertook at the University of Birmingham, UK. As part of my doctoral study, I developed an alternative perspective on dyslexia to support dyslexic students to reconceptulise the cause of dyslexia to external factors and not from their biological makeup. I also developed and tested coaching intervention to support Further and Higher Education students to externalise dyslexia and overcome their dyslexia difficulties.

My Personal Experience of Dyslexia

Along with my Dyslexia Coaching experience and academic research on dyslexia, I have first-hand experience of being dyslexic. I was severely dyslexic until the age of 38, which was when I began to reconceptualise my dyslexia using the Externalising Dyslexia Approach that I developed during my doctoral study. I then spent several years overcoming the dyslexia difficulties that I was experiencing.

I am now 56 years old and whilst I no longer experience any dyslexia difficulties, I still view myself as ‘dyslexic’ but in a totally different way. Before the age of 38 I viewed dyslexia as a condition that existed on a biological level and that was beyond my ability to control or change; whereas now, I view my dyslexia as existing on a psychological level.

My personal experience of dyslexia is extremely useful to me as a Dyslexia Coach, as it enables me to understand first-hand what my coaching clients  might be experiencing. I also know deeply what it feels like to have struggled for many years to overcome the dyslexia difficulties that severely impacted on my education as a child and in my life as an adult.

I was coached by Dr Antonio as a child, around 12 years ago. The coaching boosted my confidence and was an amazing learning experience. I learnt how to question the existing traditional system of education and that this system isn't necessarily the best way to learn. I also learnt new methods of learning that suite my specific needs. The coaching was judgemental free and I felt accepted for who and how I am. It was lots of fun too.

I'm glad Dr A started DBC and I'm proud to be a DBC member. I highly recommend you to join!

Dr Antonio helped me develop self confidence, kindness (for myself and others) and taught me several models and theories that helped me immensely in my subsequent work in the NHS and local government. My favourite thing about being mentored by Antonio is how his teachings are grounded in academia and psychotherapeutic theory but are also immensely human. Above all Antonio is a great person, he practices what he preaches and acts as someone I looked up to and strived to be like.

I'm proud to be a member of the Dyslexic Brain Coach Community.

I have known Antonio for over 10 years. I’m impressed with the research that he did for his PhD and how this, and his vast knowledge of dyslexia, now filters into his coaching and mentoring.

I think it is wonderful that Antonio is now offering his coaching expertise online and I'm sure it will be of tremendous benefit to all who join.

I have been Dr Antonio’s mentor for over 40 years and know him to be of good character. I remember supporting Antonio to learn to read and write as a teenager, which he achieved after many years through great determination. I have worked alongside Antonio to deliver educational coaching at the boxing gym and can sincerely say that his way of working with young people is effective. I am confident that he will do the same on his dyslexia website.
